Review: Magic (iLL Blu ft OFB)

Funky production duo, iLL Blu, are back with what may be a look at the future of the UK drill scene: a drill/R&B hybrid. “Magic,” featuring OFB group members, Bandokay and Double Lz, pairs iLL Blu’s adept beat-making ability with R&B vocals and two of drill’s most prominent rising stars.

While the bouncy beat may initially make some second guess this somewhat unorthodox pairing, Bandokay’s delivery on the first verse reassures that this is a hit. His signature barky, energetic flow and greaze-themed lyrics are perfectly juxtaposed against the Garage-esque vocalizations and xylophone riffs in the background. His ability to flow on a track so different from any other he’s flowed on so far is impressive and illustrates his versatility and growth as an artist.

Bandokay’s verse blends seamlessly into the melodic bridge, which then transitions to the hook shared with Double Lz. While OFB certainly misses the talent of fellow member, SJ, Bandokay and Double Lz provide a smooth back and forth over some beautifully thumping 808s.

Double Lz then rolls into his verse with his usual composed style that belies his age. However, don’t let his composure belie the nature of his lyrics. Double Lz reminds everyone this is still rooted in the roads: “You ain't savin' these shots like Cech/If you don't move right then you're gonna get left. “

Overall, this tune is an impressive display of versatility from OFB and a laudable production by iLL Blu. Unlike iLL Blu’s collab last year with Loski on “Chop My Money,” Magic allows OFB to stay true to their drill roots while simultaneously expanding their repertoire outside of pure drill beats. The infectious beat, melody, and flows on this one will surely be getting plays all spring and summer, and I expect more drill artists will further experiment with this R&D (Rhythm & Drill) vibe. My only criticism is that I wish the track was longer.
